Day 26: Pure Cardio & Cardio Abs

Oops.  I meant to wake up early and do the workout before church.

I woke up with my alarm and 8 hours of sleep... feeling ultra drained and fatigued.  I guess yesterday really wore me out.  I also put on some topical analgesics (Tiger balm) on my shoulders and neck.

My neck has been feeling really stiff lately.  I think it's a result of my right shoulder hurting again... I really have to watch my form during my push-ups and plank positions.

BUT!  I did my workout after church and 2 hours after eating lunch.  Usually don't like to eat with food on my stomach... and I know why.  I got a little cramp in my side while working out, then it went away.  Then it started on the other side.  Luckily, it eventually went away.  I did complete my workout feeling a bit bloated.  Yuck.  \(´Д`)/

Onto workout thoughts:

Pure Cardio!

Again, I was able to get through the first exercises with no real problem (tiring... but no breaks) until Level 2 drills came up!!!  UGH!  Those Level 1 and Level 2 drills... My arms get so tired, plus my chest is already tired from the days before... that I always need to rest my arms.

My thoughts on certain exercises today!

Exercises I enjoyed:
~ Switch Kicks:  First time for me to put these here!  Every week... this exercise has killed me that I don't/can't jump (hop) from kick to kick.  But today, I was able to.  Strange.  I did tire out a bit... but I kept kicking, albeit a bit slower at the end of the minute
~ Football sprints:  I talk about these all the time.  Love.
~ Pedals:  I love these.  Sprints + 2 lunges... repeat.  I love exercises that call for sprinting.  Fast movements!  The lunges get difficult nearing the end... but love love love.
~ Mountain Climbers:  I hated these exercises at first.  They are growing on me.  I think because my lower abs are getting stronger?  Most likely my hip-flexors and my quadriceps... My knees are lifting higher, therefore I'm happier with doing this exercise.  When I first started it, my knees weren't so high.  Form is getting better.
~ Suicide jumps (burpees):  Tough!  2nd to last exercise of the set.  BUT!  I stuck pretty well with it.  Seriously tough by the time I got here... but that's what you're asking for with Insanity.  This one really got me pushing mentally to tough it out.
~ Push-up jacks:  Another exercise I hate.  LOL.  I really didn't do them in the beginning.  I did Suicide Jumps... and thought "No.  Stopping now, not doing these."  Then I saw 20 seconds left... so I pushed and did 14 of them without stopping to finish strong.

Exercise is really a mental activity.  It's so easy to give up and quit.  It's easy for your mind to say "This is hard, let's stop." or "You're tired, you've done enough."

Well, you haven't!  If you can think that, if you can still move... you can do it!  I get in my head sometimes.  During certain parts of the DVD workouts, Shaun T says "If you're tired, take a break." which is true.  You should take a break if you're tired... but I take that as an excuse sometimes to just take a break and get water.

No more excuses!  Not even going to talk about exercises I had difficulty with today.  I had some difficulty with some... but just fatigue.  I was able to push through switch kicks and push-ups jacks, so pretty proud of the Pure Cardio workout today!

Cardio Abs

Seriously doing this back to back with Pure Cardio is INSANE.  I wish I could have done this later in the day or evening... but I didn't want to shower twice.

Quickly ~ The "C-sit position" exercises are getting a little easier.  I do still have to take breaks during the double-knee in-outs, and my arms still are tired during the plank oblique exercises (especially today after push-up jacks)... but I do my best to keep up.

I can't believe this is my last time doing Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs.  I'm still not totally beating them.  Next week is Core Cardio & Balance... then Month 2!!!  *worried*  (@ ̄Д ̄@;)

But I'll do my best!!!

Tomorrow is my final Plyometric Cardio Circuit!  *excited*

Day 22: Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs

Pure Cardio!!!  then Cardio Abs!

Woke up this morning and boom!  Time to work out!  8a insanity!  Which was tough!  It took me a while to wake up and warm-up physically.  I also wasn't mentally prepared.  BUT!  I pushed through it!

I had to do testing for my thesis... so there was no rest for me in between Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs...... which was tough!  As soon as I completed workout 1... it was onto part 2.  Totally dying.

Pure Cardio was the similar for last week.

Did well the entire workout... then Level 2 drills came up.  When is that... about 9 min more or less into the workout?  Death to arms!  Right shoulder pain also started happening here during push-ups... so I started skipping push-ups and doing mt. climbers (floor sprints) in place.  I just ended getting so tired... then it was kind of down hill.  LOL.

I pushed through frog jumps, ski jumps, scissor jumps, and suicide drills pretty well, but push-up jacks didn't happen.  Shoulder hurt too much!  I didn't even risk it.  Did stretches, and onto Cardio Abs!

... Cardio Abs without a rest is tiring!  It was a real challenge to do knee tuck jumps and side knee tuck jumps immediately finishing Pure Cardio.  Also a little strange since you "cool down" and stretch at the end of Pure Cardio.  Makes me a little confused.

Once I sat down and got in the "C-sit position" it wasn't too bad.  It's always the point of double knee tucks and leg extensions when my abs say "break time!"  I do my best to push through... but phew!  These get tough!  Finished it up quick, showered, then off to work!

I wanted to go running today... but no time!  Such a busy day.  Hopefully tomorrow?

Tomorrow is Cardio Power & Resistance!

Day 17: Running + Walking + Pure Cardio

I did a lot today.  But!  I did skip out on doing Cardio Abs.  While I was resting and stretching after Pure Cardio... my aunt asked me to eat.  I still needed to shower and it was 9:00p, so  I decided tomorrow will be Cardio Abs and Cardio Recovery.

Running:  After work morning time run/walk!
Minimum speed:  5.0 mph (12 min mile pace)
Maximum speed:  8.5 mph (7 min mile pace)
Total time on treadmill:  18 minutes
Distance ran:  1.75 miles
Calories burned:  204 kcal

*** Note *** LOL Kinda funny.  I always try to choose a treadmill next to someone who's running at a decent pace.  That way it will mentally motivate me to want to keep up and not be slow.  Slight natural competitive mode in me... ^^;

I would have run a bit more, but had to meet with Steph and Loy for lunch!  So it was cut a bit short.

Arrived home, fell asleep (oops), woke up and took a walk to try to get rid of the huge bolus of undigested food in my stomach.

Walking:  After nap = need to get the blood pumping
Distance walked:  2.2 miles
Total time walked:  40 minutes
Calories burned:  ~ 220 kcal

Now for the main course!  Walking was a good warm-up for me pre-Insanity!!!

Today was Pure Cardio!  I was really proud of myself today!

Warm-up:
I kick butt at the warm-up!!!  It's the standard warm-up like shown in this earlier video of the Pure Cardio warm-up... except NOW I am kicking butt in my 3rd set!!!  I used to die all the time... but this week... I'm like superwoman!

Pure Cardio Circuit:
Like I said in an earlier post, the workout itself is about 15-16 minutes of non-stop cardio.  Each exercise lasts 1 minute and you push through!  I made it all the way to "Level 2 Drills" without stopping and keeping pace... then these buggers showed their ugly head!  So I'l talk about the last part of the workout, because I felt pretty strong with everything else.

Level 2 Drills:  A burpee + 8 push-ups + 8 mt.climbers (floor sprints) + a jump up!!! <--- These kill!!!  kill kill kill me.  It's the push-ups that do it.  My arms totally want to give up, I end up having to do modified knee push-ups.

Frog Jumps:  A forward/backward jump-squat with an upward arm reach.  I was strong in the beginning... then realized 30 seconds left.  I should not watch the time because then I get psyched out!  It was starting here when I felt my thighs feel heavy.

Suicides (burpees):  Arms were dying during this one!  My butt kept wanting to go in the air!  They started out strong (briefly)... then nope!  LOL.  Slowed down, but did my best to keep moving and keep form.

8 hooks + Jump rope jumps:  I love these!  Although I'm dying, I can do these.  Also, instead of 8 hooks, I split it into 4 hooks right, then 4 hooks left.  I do this because it ends with 8 hooks right... and I hate being uneven, so if I split it up, then I'll be even at the end!  And also for some reason... I can do the jump rope jumps  real high.  Don't know if they're real high... but in my vision they look like it!  LOL.

Push-up Jacks:  OH how I want to click *dislike* for you push-up jacks!!!  lol.  This is the last minute and exercise... but my arms are always so fatigued by now... that I am super struggling doing these!  I do a couple, sit on my knees... then do 1-2 more; then rest again.  Rarzz!!!

I know I'm missing a few exercises at the end, but that's what my brain wants to remember now.  ^^;  I'm guessing that means the others didn't make as much of an impact on me to like or dislike.

So tomorrow will be Cardio Abs and Cardio Recovery!
Maybe throw in a bike ride or a walk somewhere!

p.s. I found an awesome review of Pure Cardio here at http://www.extremely-fit.com/.  It lists all the exercises and has review on other parts of Insanity, other workouts such as P90X & ChaLEAN, and wellness & nutrition tips!

Day 13: Meal 1 ~ Breakfast + Pure Cardio

I meant to go running this morning at the gym... but didn't make it!  Maybe I'll run after Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs.  A little worried... 2 workouts... then running?  I think I can do it.  Just gotta space them out... but showering?  *thinks*  I hate taking 2 showers in one day.

Oh well, we'll see!

Breakfast:  same ole cereal!

Food:  1 cup Post Banana Nut Cereal (240 kcal), 1/2 cup Vanilla Almond Soy Milk (~40 kcal)

Calories:  ~280 kcal

LOL You'll note the picture isn't food.  It's me after Pure Cardio workout!  This is me sweating and making beloved duckface.

Right now, this is my breaktime before I go into Cardio Abs!  Let's review my workout for today's Pure Cardio session!

Some reason during the warm-up I was getting a side-cramp on my left.  The last time I ate was breakfast.  I haven't had a snack since then... so unsure?  Maybe it was all the water I was drinking when I was driving around.  Kind of slowed me down in the beginning.

At least my warm-up feels stronger.  My 3rd set is kicking butt!  It used to kill me before!

Exercises that were difficult:
~ Suicide drills ~ Some reason I couldn't move fast!  And it was the first exercise!  Maybe I'm just tired.  *fail*
~ Level 2 drills ~ The burpee and "floor sprints" (mt. climbers) didn't both me... but the 8 push-ups in between!  Ended up having to modify them to knee push-ups!
~ Frog Jumps ~ Again, I modified them to full squats instead of half squats... but got so tired by 30 seconds!  I had to slow down... then was going really slow.
~ Push-up Jacks ~ The last exercise of the circuit.  So tired by then.  Took me about 5 seconds to mentally start and begin doing the exercises.  Boo to upper body!  *needs to get stronger*

Fun exercises:
~ Suicide jumps (burpees) ~ YES!  no push-ups in between.  This was getting tough at the end, but I like burpees.  They're such a great exercise.
~ Football drills ~ I keep naming the same exercises right?  LOL
~ Sprints + Lunges ~ I like when we move fast.  We're always supposed to move fast, but these are fun
~ Ski Jumps ~ A little difficult for me, but I enjoy trying to get "high" off the floor

Don't know if I'm forgetting anything... but it's been a few minutes.  Instead of prolonging it... onto Cardio Abs!!!

Day 9: Pure Cardio

I feel really good about today's workout!  Completed it around 4:00p.

My warm-up was pretty kick-butt!  I was going really fast during the 3rd set and didn't fee ultra winded.  *proud*  I was really focusing on completing it strong.

Both Cardio Power & Resistance or Plyometric Cardio Circuit are "interval" workouts ~ meaning you get to take breaks in between sets of exercises, but you go max out.  Pure Cardio workout is approximately 16 minutes of non-stop exercises.

Non-stop!

You can take a break, but you just jump back in when you're ready.

Exercises that killed me in this circuit:
~ Frog jumps -- I decided to change it from a squat to a "full squat" meaning you squat all the way to the floor for full range of motion (ROM).  If you can do a movement, you should strengthen it through the entire range of motion.  As long as you stay within the boundaries of safety.  Going to a full squat (as late as it is in the circuit)... was killer.
~ Push-up jacks -- ahhh!  upper body strength!  I would do 2, then keel over ^^;  I did my best though
~ Level 2 drills -- again with the upper body strength!  The "suicides" (burpees) and "floor sprints" (mountain climbers) weren't a problem... (well, too much), but the push-ups!  Just to keep going, I modified to knee-push-ups.

Favorite exercises in this circuit:
~ Football sprints -- I really like these!  I think they're fun!  Even with all the jiggling ^^;
~ Hook punches + high knees to chest -- These were fun too XD

I was dying last week during Pure Cardio (because I was doing the wrong order of exercises), but this time it was lots of fun!

Tomorrow is Plyometric Cardio Circuit!

*a little worried cause already sore...*

Day 2: Pure Cardio

This workout isn't overall "difficult" per say... but doing it 24 hours after completing "Plyometric Cardio Circuit" is difficult.

After a certain points "high knees" were not happening --> during the mountain climbers and during the jumps.  I also had trouble with the push-ups in between the burpees because my chest and tris are sore from yesterday's workout.  I have a pretty weak upper-body since I hurt my shoulder last year.  Only beginning to strengthen now.

Jumps at the end were difficult as well.  Again ~ wouldn't be much of a problem if I wasn't sore... but I guess this is what they call "hell week" right?  Remember hell week?  We used to have those in high school sports.

Basically a microcycle of either 1-2 weeks of pure hard work:  muscle building, hypertrophy, strengthening, beat you til you're too tired to walk/move.  Then... boom!  Supercompensation!  I am superwoman and I can jump over cars.

Yes.  I did use the word supercompensation.
Read more about it.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercompensation

So I'm guessing after the second week's rest period, this will not be as bad, and I won't be as wimpy as I am now.

Video time!

I decided to videotape myself doing the warm-up.  The warm-up is the same for each work-out (mostly).  I recorded myself doing 2/3 of it.  Why only 2/3?

The format of the warm-up is a series of exercises completed in 3 sets consecutively.  The challenge is that with each set, the next set is performed faster.

So the final third of the warm-up is just another repeating set of what you see, except faster.

I told you earlier:  This workout is no joke.
